The Ivory Tower has fired a shot over the bow of the Bush juggernaut. A group calling itself the Coalition For a Realistic Foreign Policy has released a statement of principles and announced its intention to launch a campaign of publications, conferences and media appearances aimed at calling the Bush foreign policy into question and debate. In the final days of the USSR there were shortages of just about everything. One exception was znachki – cheap metal badges that were minted to celebrate events from the grandiose to the laughably trivial. Znachki were invariably positive, patriotic and humourless. Badges of the ‘My parents stood in line for ten hours and all they got me was a crappy piece of metal’ sort were never printed. Continue reading

If you are anything like me, when you hear the terms ‘Wahhabism’ or ‘Islamofascism,’ you think of Scotland. Glasgow may be Mecca to none, but it was there that I encountered the young Kuwaiti who is the subject of this column. I should make it clear from the outset that I’m not accusing him of anything, other than being a spoiled brat and snotty xenophobe. I’ll refer to him only as V lest these words bring down upon him the wrath of John Ashcroft or of his mother. Continue reading
